BEYOND is the final documentary in The Brick Kiln Donkeys of Egypt trilogy from Orange Planet Pictures, examining the evolving welfare of working donkeys in Egypt’s brick kiln industry.
In the intense heat of Egypt’s kiln yards, thousands of donkeys continue to haul bricks and raw materials every day. For decades, many of these animals have worked long hours in harsh conditions, often suffering from exhaustion, untreated injuries and a lack of veterinary care.
Returning to the Al Gisa desert with animal welfare charity Safe Haven for Donkeys in the Holy Land, the film asks an important question: can meaningful change happen in an industry long defined by hardship for both animals and people?
Filmed across multiple visits, BEYOND documents a gradual but significant shift taking place within the brick kiln communities. Veterinary teams are now visiting regularly, injured animals are receiving treatment, and education programmes are beginning to improve understanding of animal welfare among kiln workers.
For the first time, mechanised transport is also being trialled as a practical alternative to animal labour — offering a potential path toward reducing reliance on working donkeys.
Rather than presenting a simple narrative of villains and heroes, the film explores the complex realities behind the kiln industry. Economics, tradition, culture and survival all shape the lives of the people working there, and real progress requires patience, cooperation and trust.
While the challenges remain immense, the documentary reveals early signs of change. Donkeys that were once beaten and exhausted are healthier and calmer. Standards are slowly improving. Attitudes are beginning to shift.
