Bricks is the second documentary in a trilogy from Orange Planet Pictures exploring the lives of donkeys working in Egypt’s brick kiln industry.

In October 2024, British actor and animal welfare advocate Peter Egan returned to the Al Gisa desert in Egypt alongside the charity Safe Haven for Donkeys in the Holy Land to continue documenting the plight of working donkeys used in brick production.

​

Across Egypt’s kiln yards, thousands of donkeys are used as the primary source of labour to transport bricks and raw materials. Many work long hours in extreme heat, often suffering from untreated injuries, exhaustion, and poor living conditions.

​

The film provides a deeper look into the realities faced by these animals while also highlighting the extraordinary efforts of veterinary teams and rescue workers who travel from kiln to kiln providing emergency care. Through their work, severely injured donkeys receive medical treatment, relief from suffering, and in some cases a chance at rehabilitation.

As the second film in the Brick Kiln Donkeys of Egypt trilogy, Bricks builds on the story introduced in Broken, continuing to document both the scale of the problem and the dedication of the people working to improve the welfare of these animals.

Together, the films aim to raise awareness of the conditions faced by working donkeys in Egypt and to support the organisations striving to bring compassion, veterinary care, and lasting change to one of the country’s most overlooked animal welfare issues.
